What is Our Solution?
Restore the Majority is a student-run campaign that believes the UC’s future depends on restoring majority control over California’s budget.
We support all initiatives and legislation that would replace California’s two-thirds supermajority requirement for passing a budget with a 50% simple majority. Currently, the only initiative on the November ballot that would achieve this is Proposition 25. We strongly urge all students in California’s public higher education systems to vote yes on Prop. 25.
Prop. 25 does two very simple things. (1) It would change California’s constitution so that a budget is passed with 50% support in both houses of the California legislature, instead of 66%. This means that the progressive majority in the legislature, which supports public higher education, would control the spending priorities of our progressive state. (2) It would also revoke lawmaker pay for every day the budget is overdue.
The Coalition for a Strong UC is leading “Restore the Majority” campaigns on all 10 University of California campuses to educate students about California’s two-thirds requirement and drive votes for Prop. 25. We are working in conjunction with the University of California Students Association, the California College Democrats, and the UC Berkeley student body government, all of which have endorsed Prop. 25 and are supporters of our “Restore the Majority” effort.
Our goal is to put our message in front of every UC student at least once before November, via events, flyering, tabling, new media, and peer-to-peer outreach. To find out what the Coalition for a Strong UC is doing on your campus, contact us at restorethemajority [at] gmail.com.
